This Sunday, our readings invite us to reflect on selflessness and the profound trust we are called to place in God’s providence.
In the first reading from Book of Kings, we encounter the widow of Zarephath, who, despite her own meager resources, offers her last bit of food to the prophet Elijah. Her willingness to give, even when she has so little, results in God’s miraculous provision, ensuring that her jar of flour and jug of oil do not run dry. This story teaches us that true selflessness is measured not by the abundance of our resources but by our willingness to share, even in times of scarcity.
The responsorial psalm, Psalm 146, echoes this theme, proclaiming, “The Lord keeps faith forever, secures justice for the oppressed, gives food to the hungry.” It reminds us of God’s unwavering faithfulness and His care for those who trust in Him.
In Hebrews 9:24-28, we are reminded of Christ’s ultimate sacrifice, as He entered heaven itself to appear before God on our behalf, offering Himself once for all to remove sin. This act of divine selflessness calls us to respond with gratitude and a willingness to follow His example in our lives.
The Gospel of Mark 12:38-44 presents the account of the poor widow who contributes two small coins to the temple treasury. Jesus notes that while others gave from their surplus, she gave all she had to live on. Her act of faith and complete trust in God’s provision serves as a powerful lesson, challenging us to give not just from our surplus but from the heart, trusting in God to provide for us.
Parish Updates: Enhancing Our Sacred Space
Thanks to your ongoing support, we’ve been able to make several improvements to our parish facilities:
- New Lighting in the Parking Lot: We have installed new lamps to enhance safety and visibility, especially during evening events.
- Repainting of the IHM Shrine: The Immaculate Heart of Mary Shrine at the bell tower has been restored with Mary now adorned in a vibrant dark blue. This refresh not only enhances the church’s beauty but also serves as a reminder of our devotion to Our Blessed Mother.
These projects have been made possible through your kindness in supporting our second collection for maintenance. Your dedication to our parish is deeply appreciated. If you’d like to continue supporting these projects, please consider contributing to the maintenance fund during our second collections or by reaching out to the parish office.
As we reflect on today’s readings, may we be inspired by the selflessness of the widows, who gave even in their poverty, trusting fully in God. May we embody such heartfelt giving in our own lives, confident that God, who sees our hearts, will always provide for our needs.
In Christ’s love,
Fr. Matt
