As we journey through this First Sunday of Lent, our readings invite us to reflect on God’s faithfulness, the power of faith, and our own struggles with temptation. Lent is a time of renewal—a time to turn our hearts back to God, to trust in His protection, and to deepen our faith in His saving grace.
In the first reading, Moses instructs the Israelites on how to offer their first fruits as a sign of gratitude for God's deliverance. This passage reminds them (and us) to always remember what God has done—how He led His people out of slavery in Egypt and brought them into a land flowing with abundance. In the same way, we are called to give thanks for the ways God has delivered us from sin and continues to guide us.
Responsorial Psalm – Psalm 91 is a powerful prayer of trust in God’s protection. It reminds us that those who take refuge in the Lord will be shielded from harm. Angels will guard them, and God Himself will answer them in times of distress. This is a comforting promise as we face spiritual battles and trials in life.
In Romans 10:8-13, Paul speaks of the power of faith in Christ as the source of salvation. He emphasizes that anyone—Jew or Gentile—who believes in Jesus and calls upon His name will be saved. Salvation is not about status, background, or personal merit, but about faith in the saving power of Christ.
The Gospel takes us into the wilderness, where Jesus faces temptation from the devil. After fasting for forty days, He is physically weak, yet He stands firm against the devil’s lies. Jesus does not rely on His own strength but on the Word of God to resist temptation. This is a profound lesson for us during Lent: temptation will come, but God's Word is our defense.
Reflection Questions for the Week:
Lent is a time to reflect, renew, and resist. As we begin this season, may we learn from Jesus’ time in the desert. Let us arm ourselves with faith, trust in God's protection, and rely on His Word to guide us through every trial.
May this Lent be a season of growth, renewal, and deeper intimacy with God.
In Christ’s love, Fr. Matt
