Today’s readings remind us of the beauty and power of persevering faith. We hear of Moses with arms raised in prayer, of Paul urging Timothy to stay strong in Scripture, and of Jesus teaching us to pray without losing heart. Each reading calls us to steadfastness — in prayer, in faith, and in mutual support.
In the first reading (Exodus 17:8–13), Moses intercedes for his people as Joshua leads the battle below. But when Moses grows tired, Aaron and Hur hold up his hands, and Israel prevails. This image beautifully shows the importance of community in our spiritual life. None of us stands alone. Sometimes we are the ones praying on the hill; other times, we are called to be the ones holding up another’s arms. Faith grows stronger when we lift each other up.
St. Paul reminds Timothy to “remain faithful to what you have learned,” knowing that “all Scripture is inspired by God.” (2 Timothy 3:14–4:2) God’s Word shapes us daily—it teaches, comforts, challenges, and strengthens. In moments of confusion or weariness, the Scriptures remain a sure guide, lighting our path and renewing our hope.
In the Gospel (Luke 18:1–8), Jesus tells the story of the persistent widow who never gives up. Even though the judge is indifferent, her perseverance wins justice. Jesus asks, “When the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?” Our Lord isn’t questioning God’s faithfulness—He’s asking about ours. Can we keep believing, keep praying, and keep hoping even when the answers seem delayed?
As autumn settles in, with shorter days and busier schedules, it can be easy to grow spiritually weary. Yet God invites us to remain persistent—to pray, to trust, and to support one another. Like Moses, we all need helping hands from time to time. Like the widow, we must keep our eyes on God’s justice and mercy. And like Timothy, we must root our lives in the living Word of God.
Let us be a parish that prays together, encourages one another, and refuses to lose heart. God hears the prayers we whisper in faith.
When have I felt like Moses—tired and in need of someone to lift me up?
Who in my life might need my support and encouragement in prayer right now?
How can I deepen my connection to God’s Word this week?
In what situations am I being called to persist in faith, even without clear answers?
Lord, when I grow weary, renew my strength.
When my faith wavers, steady my heart.
Teach me to persevere in prayer,
to trust your timing, and to find courage in your Word.
May I never lose heart, but always lift my eyes to you,
my help and my hope.
Amen.
In Christ,
Fr. Matt
