Isn’t this wonderful? Last Monday we celebrated the last day of school! The weather is warming up and I bet that you are looking forward to your summer vacation. The season of lemonade, swimming at the pool, enjoying the Jersey Shore, staying up late and having friends over is upon us. There are so many opportunities time to have a good time!
When I was a young boy, during an end of school year homily, our priest said a very interesting statement: “Vacations are from God but there is no vacation from God.”
During these summer days we have more time for our spiritual lives. As we enjoy ourselves, we give thanks for God’s many gifts. The word Eucharist means “to give thanks.” The summer is the perfect time to worship at Sunday Mass. It is a joyous time when we meet with our dear friend, Jesus. The Eucharist binds us to God and to one another as a community of faith. The Eucharist is a moment for refreshing our faith, reminding us to continue to grow as our sins are forgiven, and a time of listening and growing in our understanding of God's Word that always speaks of hope and new beginnings.
May we now turn to the Lord in prayer with grateful hearts as we ask for the grace of perseverance and joy at our celebrations of the Eucharist. I truly believe that the Eucharist, wherever we find ourselves this summer, is the best way that we can give thanks for all that we have received during this past year.
