Today the Church celebrates the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. This feast reminds us that what was once a symbol of shame and suffering has become for us the greatest sign of God’s love and salvation.
In the Book of Numbers, the people of Israel, bitten by serpents, were healed when they looked at the bronze serpent lifted up by Moses. This foreshadows Christ Himself, who was lifted up on the Cross to bring eternal healing and life to all who believe in Him.
The Letter to the Philippians gives us one of the most beautiful hymns of the New Testament. St. Paul reminds us that though Christ was in the form of God, He emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant, and became obedient unto death on a Cross. Because of His humility and obedience, God exalted Him above every name. The Cross is the path to glory.
In the Gospel of John, Jesus tells us that just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up. It is here we hear the most beloved verse of Scripture: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him may not perish but may have eternal life.” The Cross reveals God’s mercy, not condemnation.
This feast also prepares us for tomorrow’s memorial, Our Lady of Sorrows. Mary stood faithfully at the foot of the Cross, sharing in her Son’s suffering with a heart full of love. Her example teaches us to remain close to Christ even in moments of pain, trusting that God’s plan always leads to life.
May this feast strengthen our faith, deepen our hope, and renew our love. As we gaze upon the Cross, let us see not defeat but victory, not despair but everlasting life.
How do I see the Cross in my daily life—not just as a burden, but as a source of grace?
In what ways can I live with greater humility, following the example of Christ’s self-emptying love?
Where do I need to lift my eyes in faith to Jesus, trusting Him for healing and salvation?
How can Mary, Our Lady of Sorrows, help me carry my own crosses with faith and courage?
Lord Jesus Christ, You were lifted high on the Cross for the salvation of the world. Help me to find in Your Cross the strength to endure trials, the grace to forgive, and the hope of eternal life. Through the intercession of Mary, Our Lady of Sorrows, may I walk always in faith and trust. Amen.
In Christ,
Fr. Matt
