Anyway, As-Is, Actualizing Love

A young man once went to duplicate a picture of his girlfriend. When he removed the photo from the frame, he noticed words written on the back:
"My dearest Tommy: I love you with all my heart. I love you more and more each day. I will love you forever and ever. I am yours for all eternity. — Dianne."
Beautiful words of love! But there was also a P.S.: “If we should ever break up, I want this picture back.”
That kind of “conditional” love — full of passion, yet hedged with an escape clause — is something many of us know too well. Our world is full of people longing for love, but often “looking for love in all the wrong places.”
The TV series Lost illustrated this hunger. In Season 2, Shannon, a young woman who feels worthless and abandoned, tells Sayid, “I need you to believe in me.” Sayid assures her: “I will never leave you. I love you.” Shannon’s surprise is telling — she had never experienced love without conditions or fear of abandonment.
And isn’t that true for many of us? We crave a love that won’t fade, won’t betray, won’t abandon us. The good news of Scripture is that such love exists — and it comes from God.
God’s Love in Scripture

• John 3:16–17: God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, not to condemn, but to save.
• 1 Corinthians 13: Love is patient, kind, enduring, never-ending.
• 1 John 4: God is love. Whoever abides in love abides in God, and God in them.

This is not love with a “P.S.” clause. It is love that remains — “anyway,” “as-is,” and “actualizing.”
I. Anyway Love

Years ago, a young boy was caught stealing a toy from a store. His mother was called in. Everyone expected her to be furious. Instead, she knelt down, looked him in the eye, and said: "I’m disappointed, but nothing you do will ever make me stop loving you. You are my son. I will love you anyway." That moment changed the boy’s life. As an adult, he shared: “That was the first time I realized love doesn’t disappear when I fail. It actually gave me the strength to change." That’s how God loves us. He knows our sins, our mistakes, our excuses. And still, He whispers: "You are my child. I love you anyway." St. Paul said it best: "God proves His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8). God didn’t wait for us to get it right. He loved us anyway. We mess up. We fall short. We act foolishly. But nothing cancels His love. As Paul also wrote in Romans 8, "Nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

II. As-Is Love
A few years ago, Habitat for Humanity hosted a housing dedication. A family received the keys to their new home. It wasn’t perfect — paint dripped in a few spots, a door creaked, the yard was unfinished. But when the mother opened the door, she burst into tears and said: “We never thought anyone would give us something like this. We’re not perfect people, but this is our home.”
That is “As-Is” love. Not love that waits until the house is flawless, or until the family is flawless. But love that says: “This is for you, right now, as you are.”
God’s love works the same way. He doesn’t demand we have every piece of our life polished before He opens the door of His Kingdom. He takes us “as-is” — dents, cracks, flaws and all.
That’s why Jesus told the parable of the banquet: “Go out into the streets and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame.” God doesn’t invite us because we are perfect. He invites us as we are.
III. Actualizing Love
Once we realize God loves us anyway and as-is, that love changes us. It gives us confidence, dignity, and the freedom to live without fear.
Think of a child learning to walk. If she falls, her parents don’t say: “Well, that’s it. You failed.” No — they cheer, lift her up, and say: “Try again!” That love empowers the child to keep going until walking becomes second nature.
That’s what God’s unconditional love does for us. It takes our failures and turns them into steps forward. It gives us courage to try again. It actuates love within us — love for ourselves, and love for others.
When we know we are loved unconditionally, it changes us. It gives us dignity, stability, identity. We no longer need to chase approval from the world. We no longer live enslaved by shame or self-doubt.
To know God’s love is to realize we are very good — not perfect, but deeply loved. And that realization actuates love within us. We begin to love ourselves with the same unconditional love. And when we love ourselves rightly, we can love others rightly.
Conclusion – The Rosetta Stone of Love
In London’s British Museum rests the Rosetta Stone. Because the same text was written on it in Greek and Egyptian, scholars unlocked the mystery of hieroglyphics for the first time.
In the same way, Jesus Christ is our Rosetta Stone. Through His cross and resurrection, the mystery of God’s love is revealed. A love that says:

• I love you anyway.
• I love you as-is.
• I love you in a way that transforms and actuates your life.

So if you feel lost like Shannon, or if you’ve been looking for love in the wrong places, hear this: in Christ, you are known, named, and loved without condition.
Bring your “As-Is” self to the table of grace. Let God’s “Anyway” love wash over you. Let His “Actualizing” love set you free to love yourself and others.
Because the truth is simple, profound, and eternal: God is love. And those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them.
