In today’s Gospel (Luke 13:22–30), Jesus speaks of the “narrow gate,” reminding us that discipleship requires more than casual faith—it demands commitment, perseverance, and authenticity. It is not enough to be familiar with the Lord from a distance; we are called to know Him personally and walk in His ways daily.
The prophet Isaiah paints a hopeful vision: God will gather people from every nation to see His glory. This vision is echoed in our Responsorial Psalm: “Go out to all the world and tell the Good News.” The Kingdom of God is not closed or narrow in its invitation—it is wide in its reach, calling every person, from every land, to come to the Lord’s table.
At the same time, the Letter to the Hebrews reminds us that God’s loving discipline strengthens us for this journey, producing the “peaceful fruit of righteousness” when we endure trials with faith. Entering the narrow gate is not about exclusion, but about perseverance and a life genuinely rooted in Christ.
This Sunday also coincides with the Feast of St. Bartholomew the Apostle. Though he lived in the shadow of other apostles, Bartholomew carried the Gospel courageously to distant lands. Tradition tells us that he brought the Good News as far as India, and later to Armenia, where he was martyred for the faith. His missionary zeal and ultimate sacrifice remind us that the command to “go out to all the world” is not optional—it is at the heart of being a disciple. His quiet but steadfast faith shows us what it means to walk through the narrow gate and to open wide the invitation of God’s Kingdom to others.
As summer draws to a close and a new school year begins, let us renew our commitment to living the Gospel with intention. May we be strengthened to persevere in prayer, in acts of love, and in welcoming all people into God’s family.
Reflection Questions for the Week
Prayer for the Week
Lord Jesus, strengthen me to walk faithfully on the narrow path of discipleship. May I welcome Your discipline, embrace Your mercy, and proclaim Your Good News with courage. Through the intercession of St. Bartholomew, may my life bear witness to Your saving love and help gather many to Your eternal banquet. Amen.
In Christ,
Fr. Matt
