Dear Brothers and Sisters,
This Sunday’s readings offer a meaningful shift. Rather than multiple parables, today Jesus visits the home of Martha and Mary (Luke 10:38–42). We overhear the invitation to stop being "anxious and worried about many things" and to choose the "better part"—sitting at Jesus’ feet, listening to His Word.
In the First Reading (Genesis 18:1–10a), Abraham welcomes three mysterious visitors with generosity and hospitality. Those who stop, invite, and serve are blessed by God. In the Second Reading (Colossians 1:24–28), Paul reveals his mission: rejoicing in his sufferings for the Church, so that Christ may dwell in our hearts. His words remind us that faith isn’t passive—it’s nourishment, proclamation, and union with Jesus.
Set between these passages, Luke’s story challenges our typical busyness. Like Martha, we can get caught up in tasks—worrying about the "kitchen" of our lives. But Mary shows us the priority: presence. Being with Jesus is always the “better part.” It is what our souls truly need.
This coming Tuesday, July 22, we celebrate the Feast of St. Mary Magdalene, another witness to presence. She stayed at the foot of the cross and was first to recognize the Risen Lord. Her attentive heart echoes Mary’s posture today.
Reflection Questions for the Week:
Prayer for the Week:
Gracious Lord,
You invite us to rest in Your presence amid life’s busyness.
Grant us the grace to choose the "better part"—to listen, to be still, and to abide with You.
May our hearts find refreshment at Your feet, and may our actions flow from that space of encounter.
As St. Mary Magdalene remained faithful to Your presence, help us remain attentive to Your voice.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
In Christ,
Fr. Matt
